Murders in the Rue Morgue 1932

For our viewing enjoyment this week, Greg has chosen the 1932 pre-code Universal film “Murders in the Rue Morgue” starring Bela Lugosi and Sidney Fox. Join Greg and Karen as they discuss the film while they enjoy a “Bloody Monkey” cocktail. The recipe that Greg found on cocktailbuilder.com is below.

Bloody Monkey Cocktail Recipe

• 1 oz of grenadine syrup
• 1 oz of vodka
• 1 dash of ginger ale
• 1 oz of DeKuyper Sour Apple Pucker schnapps
• 8 oz of 7-up soda (or Sprite)

Instructions:

  1. Half-fill a highball glass with ice.
  2. Pour the grenadine around the inside of the glass and on top of the ice to give that bloody look to it.
  3. Add the vodka (more if you prefer), then the sour apple pucker.
  4. Add the ginger ale, and then fill with 7-up.
  5. Garnish as desired, and serve.

A Brief Synopsis: In 1845 Paris, mysterious Dr. Mirakle demonstrates his theories on evolution using his ape, Erik, at a carnival visited by medical student Pierre Dupin and his girlfriend, Camille Espanaye. Unknown to his audience, Mirakle performs experiments in his secret laboratory that involve mixing human blood with that of Erik’s. After three prostitutes are found dead from being injected with a strange substance, Pierre is alarmed when Camille goes missing.
