Celebrating the birthdays of both Vincent Price and Sir Christopher Lee this coming Friday, Karen has chosen the 1969 film “The Oblong Box” for our viewing enjoyment this week. It was the first film that Vincent Price and Sir Christopher Lee starred in together. Join Greg and Karen as they discuss the film while they enjoy a “Vincent Price’s New Fashioned Cocktail”. The recipe that Karen found on halloweeneverynight.com is below.
Vincent Price’s New Fashioned Cocktail Recipe
• 1 lump of sugar
• 3 dashes Angostura bitters
• 1 1/2 ounces light Canadian whiskey
• splash of club soda
• 1 twist lemon
• 1 cherry
Instructions:
- Place the sugar in a glass.
- Add the bitters and club soda, then stir with a spoon to dissolve the sugar.
- Add the whiskey, ice cube and garnish with the twist and the cherry.
A Brief Synopsis: Julian hides his horrendously disfigured brother, Sir Edward Markham, in a tower where he is kept in chains. Anxious for freedom, Edward fakes his death with the aid of an immoral attorney, Trench, and a pill that puts him into a catatonic state. But the escape plan takes a treacherous turn when Julian unwittingly buries his brother alive — and he’s later unearthed by grave robbers under the employ of malevolent Dr. Neuhardt.
Some of the topics discussed and highlights of this episode include:
- The Guinea – How much is it worth? Where did it’s name come from?
- The original Poe story – Very little from the original story by Edgar Allen Poe survive the film. Seems to be a reoccurring theme.
- Grave Robbers – How else would Doctors have gotten their cadavers to experiment and further medical knowledge?
- Vincent Price & Sir Christopher Lee – Did we mention that this is their first film together?
- Vincent Price & Sir Christopher Lee also share a birthday – May 27th.
- We learn that Karen wants to be buried in a fancy toe pincher coffin covered with leather and studs.
Our rating of the film:
This movie was OK. It took us 3 cocktails to get through it.
