This week for our viewing pleasure Greg, being a huge fan of Sir Christopher Lee, and because Karen thinks vampires are “cool”, has selected the 1973 Hammer film “The Satanic Rites of Dracula”. Join Greg and Karen as they discuss the film while they enjoy a “Black Death” cocktail. The recipe that Greg found on haveacocktail.com is below.
Black Death Cocktail Recipe
• 1 oz vodka
• 1/2 oz blue curacao
• 1/4 oz butterscotch schnapps
• 1/4 oz coffee liqueur
• 1 oz Everclear
Instructions:
- Stir the ingredients together in a whiskey sour glass, and drink through a straw.
A Brief Synopsis: When vampires infest London, a property speculator turns out to be Dracula himself. The count plans to annihilate human life through a new strain of bubonic plague. Van Helsing, a professor who has gained his doctorate by studying evil, discovers the plot and along with a group from Scotland Yard attempts to put an end to it.
Some of the topics discussed and highlights of this episode include:
- Bubonic Plague – Dr. Karen gives us all kinds of facts about the bubonic plague.
- The Sabbath of the Dead – Who knew that such a thing existed? Apparently it occurs around Thanksgiving in the United States.
- Hawthorn Tree – Did you know that it could kill vampires?
- Peter Cushing & Sir Christopher Lee – Were they BFF’s?
- Star Wars – Our hosts can’t watch a Peter Cushing film without referencing Star Wars.
- Hammer Films – Where did they get that name anyway?
- Iron Maiden – While talking about Hammer Films, Greg makes a reference to “The Beat Over Hammersmith”.
- Def Leppard – Karen makes a reference to the Def Leppard song “Armageddon It”.
Our rating of the film:
This movie was so bad that it took us 4 cocktails to get through it.
